Faith in God positively influences treatment for individuals with psychiatric illness

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Belief in God may significantly improve the outcome of those receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness, according to a recent study conducted by McLean Hospital investigators.

In the study, published in the current issue of Journal of Affective Disorders, David H. Rosmarin, PhD, McLean Hospital clinician and instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, examined individuals at the Behavioral Health Partial Hospital program at McLean in an effort to investigate the relationship between patients' level of belief in God, expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.

"Our work suggests that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without, regardless of their religious affiliation. Belief was associated with not only improved psychological wellbeing, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm," explained Rosmarin.

The study looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale. Levels of depression, wellbeing, and self-harm were assessed at the beginning and end of their treatment program.

Of the patients sampled, more than 30 percent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high. Patients with "no" or only "slight" belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment than patients with higher levels of belief.

The study concludes: ." .. belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care. More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes."

Rosmarin commented, "Given the prevalence of religious belief in the United States -- over 90% of the population -- these findings are important in that they highlight the clinical implications of spiritual life. I hope that this work will lead to larger studies and increased funding in order to help as many people as possible."

Bombing suspect reportedly a fan of al-Qaida magazine and Alex Jones website

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, left, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. (AP/The Lowell Sun & Robin Young, File)
Videos on the Internet and an online jihadist magazine may have played a part in the Boston Marathon bombings suspects? self-radicalization, according to reports.

New accounts say the brothers learned how to build a bomb from the online magazine, Inspire, which gave instructions on how to make them with a pressure cooker. Pressure cooker bombs, authorities say, were used in the attacks at the Boston Marathon.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect, reportedly told investigators there was no foreign influence on him and his brother.

But apparently the brothers learned to make a bomb from the online al-Qaida propaganda tool aimed at Westerners with slick graphics and headlines like: ?Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.?

The U.S. government deemed the publisher , a 25-year-old blogger named Samir Khan, so dangerous that he was killed in a drone strike in Yemen in 2011.

Investigators told the Associated Press the older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a shootout with police, was ?an ardent reader of jihadist websites and extremist propaganda.?

An AP report also suggests that Tamerlan had an interest in the conspiracy theories espoused on the Alex Jones website, Infowars.

Jones, who also has a radio show, told BuzzFeed, ?He could be a listener. It could be true. I've talked to the family and most of them are listeners. My show is anti-terrorism and my show exposes that most of the events we've seen have been provocateured."

Jones suggested that the Boston Marathon bombings were a plot ?hatched? by the FBI.

New battery design could help solar and wind power the grid

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have designed a low-cost, long-life battery that could enable solar and wind energy to become major suppliers to the electrical grid.

"For solar and wind power to be used in a significant way, we need a battery made of economical materials that are easy to scale and still efficient," said Yi Cui, a Stanford associate professor of materials science and engineering and a member of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, a SLAC/Stanford joint institute. "We believe our new battery may be the best yet designed to regulate the natural fluctuations of these alternative energies."

Cui and colleagues report their research results, some of the earliest supported by the DOE's new Joint Center for Energy Storage Research battery hub, in the May issue of Energy & Environmental Science.

Currently the electrical grid cannot tolerate large and sudden power fluctuations caused by wide swings in sunlight and wind. As solar and wind's combined contributions to an electrical grid approach 20 percent, energy storage systems must be available to smooth out the peaks and valleys of this "intermittent" power -- storing excess energy and discharging when input drops.

Among the most promising batteries for intermittent grid storage today are "flow" batteries, because it's relatively simple to scale their tanks, pumps and pipes to the sizes needed to handle large capacities of energy. The new flow battery developed by Cui's group has a simplified, less expensive design that presents a potentially viable solution for large-scale production.

Today's flow batteries pump two different liquids through an interaction chamber where dissolved molecules undergo chemical reactions that store or give up energy. The chamber contains a membrane that only allows ions not involved in reactions to pass between the liquids while keeping the active ions physically separated. This battery design has two major drawbacks: the high cost of liquids containing rare materials such as vanadium -- especially in the huge quantities needed for grid storage -- and the membrane, which is also very expensive and requires frequent maintenance.

The new Stanford/SLAC battery design uses only one stream of molecules and does not need a membrane at all. Its molecules mostly consist of the relatively inexpensive elements lithium and sulfur, which interact with a piece of lithium metal coated with a barrier that permits electrons to pass without degrading the metal. When discharging, the molecules, called lithium polysulfides, absorb lithium ions; when charging, they lose them back into the liquid. The entire molecular stream is dissolved in an organic solvent, which doesn't have the corrosion issues of water-based flow batteries.

"In initial lab tests, the new battery also retained excellent energy-storage performance through more than 2,000 charges and discharges, equivalent to more than 5.5 years of daily cycles," Cui said.

To demonstrate their concept, the researchers created a miniature system using simple glassware. Adding a lithium polysulfide solution to the flask immediately produces electricity that lights an LED.

A utility version of the new battery would be scaled up to store many megawatt-hours of energy.

In the future, Cui's group plans to make a laboratory-scale system to optimize its energy storage process and identify potential engineering issues, and to start discussions with potential hosts for a full-scale field-demonstration unit.

Texas single mother files lawsuit in plant explosion

By Sofia Perpetua, NBC News

A single mom, who with her young son "lost all their worldly possessions" in the fertilizer plant explosion that devastated West, Texas, is among the first people to sue the plant's owner.

Andrea Jones Gutierrez filed a lawsuit against Adair Grain on Monday. She is seeking up to $1 million.

Search and rescue workers comb through what remains of a 50-unit apartment building the day after an explosion at the West Fertilizer Company destroyed the building April 18 in West, Texas.

A fire at the West Fertilizer plant last week caused an explosion that killed 14 people, injured 200 others and destroyed at least 75 homes, according to officials. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident.

Gutierrez lived in the building next to the West Fertilizer plant with her 14-year-old son, who was at church at the time of the explosion.

If Gutierrez?hadn't?walked out of her apartment complex when she first?heard explosions outside, she?wouldn't?be here today, according to her attorney.

?Everything she and her child owned was completely destroyed,? said Randy Roberts, the attorney who represents her in the lawsuit. ?She has physical and emotional injuries, but I?m more concerned about her emotional injuries.?

Two other people who lived in the same apartment complex as Gutierrez died.

Heavy machinery is use to lift some of the debris from the West fertilizer plant Monday. The plant explosion plant explosion killed 14 people and injured more than 160 others.

?It has been over a week and the company is yet to assume any responsibility, offer assistance or contact those who were affected by this explosion,? said Roberts. ?I do expect people to file lawsuits and keep them accountable.?

The company "was negligent in the operation of its facility, creating an unreasonably dangerous condition, which led to the fire and explosion," said a lawsuit filed Friday by insurance companies on behalf of individuals, two churches and businesses including a Chevrolet car dealer and a bakery.

Daniel Keeney, a spokesman for Adair Grain Inc and for its owner, Donald Adair, declined on Tuesday to comment on the lawsuits. "Our focus is on the fact-finding and on assisting the investigating agencies in any way we can," Keeney said.

Italy watchdog fines Ryanair over online booking procedures

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's competition watchdog slapped a 400,000 euro ($521,200) fine on Irish budget airline Ryanair for falling down on commitments to simplify online ticket sales.

The regulator said the airline failed to provide an overall clear price at the very outset of the online booking procedure.

In the period December 1-February 7, Ryanair introduced at the end of the online booking process a 2 percent processing fee on a series of credit cards, the antitrust body said.

It said ticket prices should be "clearly and fully indicated from the very first contact with the consumer in such a way as to make the final price immediately clear," it said.

Consumer association Codacons said all commissions on online air tickets should be eliminated.

"The commission costs for buying with credit cards are very high and are kept hidden by some airlines until the last moment," Codacons president Carlo Rienzi said in a statement.

The fine follows a similar reprimand by the Netherlands Consumer Authority last month which fined Ryanair 370,000 euros for hidden costs associated with tickets purchased online by Dutch travellers.

Ryanair rejected the accusation.

"Ryanair will appeal the unfounded decision by the Italian competition authority," a spokesman for the airline said. ($1 = 0.7674 euros)

Boston Marathon bombing: the blame game begins

Just days after the Boston Marathon bombing, the political maneuvering and blaming have begun. Some lawmakers fault the FBI for not following up on intelligence about one of the alleged bombers. Others want to prosecute the surviving suspect as an enemy combatant.

It may be plainly obvious who was responsible for the horrific Boston Marathon bombing on Patriots? Day: ethnically Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev,?one dead in a shoot-out with police, the other seriously wounded and sedated in a Boston hospital where investigators are eager to interrogate him.

Unexploded bombs were found in their apartment, surveillance videos show them carrying heavy backpacks in the vicinity of and just before the explosions that killed three people and injured more than 180, and they are said to have acknowledged their responsibility to the driver of a car they hijacked.

But less than a week after a train of events that kept Boston-area towns on lock-down for days, the political maneuvering and blaming have already begun.

Russian officials warned the US about the older Tsarnaev brother ? Tamerlan ? in 2011. When Tamerlan returned from a six-month stay in Russia the next year, US officials questioned him and his family about any ties with radical Islam but determined that he was not a threat.

?The ball was dropped in one of two ways,? US Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina said on CNN?s ?State of the Union? Sunday. ?The FBI missed a lot of things, is one potential answer, or our laws do not allow the FBI to follow up in a sound solid way.?

?It?s people like this that you don?t want to let out of your sight, and this was a mistake,? Sen. Graham said. ?Either our laws are insufficient or the FBI failed, but we?re at war with radical Islamists and we need to up our game.?

US Rep. Peter King (R) of New York is critical of the FBI as well.

"This is at least the fifth case I'm aware of where the FBI has failed to stop someone," Rep. King said on "Fox News Sunday," citing the examples of Anwar al-Awlaki, Nidal Malik Hasan, Carlos Bledsoe, and David Coleman Headley.

"This is the latest in a series of cases like this ? where the FBI is given information about someone being a potential terrorist," he said. "They look at them, and then they don't take action, and then [those individuals] go out and commit murders."

Speaking on NBC?s ?Meet the Press,??US Rep. Mike Rogers (R) of Michigan says the fault in this case rests with Russian intelligence services who failed to fully cooperate with the FBI.

Dzhokhar?Tsarnaev remained sedated and in serious but stable condition at a Boston hospital Sunday, under heavy police guard as investigators prepared to interrogate him about his involvement in the Boston Marathon bombing that shocked the nation.

Authorities want to know if anyone else was involved.

While officials are eager to question Tsarnaev, a throat injury prevents them from doing so for now.

?We don't know if we'll ever be able to question the individual,? Boston Mayor Tom Menino said on ABC?s ?This Week? Sunday.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the injuries he sustained, but they are reported to include gunshot wounds to his neck and leg. An official who had been briefed said Tsarnaev has been "intubated and sedated,? CNN reported.

"I, and I think all of the law enforcement professionals, are hoping for a host of reasons that the suspect survives, because we have a million questions, and those questions need to be answered,? Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick told reporters Saturday. ?There are parts of the investigation, in terms of information and evidence, that still needs to be run to ground.?

Tsarnaev had been captured Friday night after 24 hours on the run, a period that saw violent confrontations with police ? one of which resulted in the death of Tsarnaev?s older brother, Tamarlan Tsarnaev ? while the Boston area remained locked down.

Officials are operating under the presumption that information Dzhokhar?Tsarnaev has relates to ongoing public safety ? their justification for proceeding with initial interrogation without issuing him the usual Miranda warning, which guarantees the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.

The American Civil Liberties Union and a federal public defender have raised concerns about investigators' plan to question Tsarnaev this way.

ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said the legal exception applies only when there is a continued threat to public safety and is "not an open-ended exception" to the Miranda rule, reports the Associated Press.

Among other things, officials want to know if anyone else was involved in the two bombings near the finish line of the Boston Marathon last Monday, which killed three people and injured more than 180, many of them seriously. Was the older Tsarnaev brother ? believed to be the leader in preparing for and carrying out the attack ? in touch with or aided by Islamic radicals here or abroad?

The two ethnically Chechen brothers may have been readying for a second attack at the time of the shootout, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis told CBS.

So far,?evidence suggests that the two brothers acted alone?in the bombings and subsequent shootout, Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau told CNN. (Dzhokhar?Tsarnaev was captured hiding in a boat parked in the Boston suburb of Watertown.)

"From what I know right now, these two acted together and alone," Chief Deveau said. "I think we have to be ever vigilant, and we're learning as we go along, but as far as this little cell ? this little group ? think we got our guys."

Boston Mayor Menino agrees.

?All of the information that I have they [is that] acted alone,? he said on ABC.

Meanwhile, officials ? and lawmakers with oversight on intelligence issues ? want to know why earlier warnings of Tamarlan Tsarnaev?s increasing radicalization somehow failed to result in more adequate follow-up.

As Monitor Moscow correspondent Fred Weir reports, Russian officials warned the US about Tamarlan Tsarnaev in 2011. When Tamarlan Tsarnaev returned from a six-month stay in Russia the next year, US officials questioned him and his family but determined that he was not a threat.

?The FBI had this guy on the radar and somehow he fell off,? a congressional aide, who said oversight committees on Capitol Hill are seeking answers from counterterrorism officials, told the Boston Globe. ?We heard for several days leading up to this there was no intelligence. Now we know there could have been intelligence.?

A Stock Market Correction Has Likely Begun, But Have We Seen A ...

From Andrew Hall, www.coastal.udel.edu:

Every year from November to March, strong lows develop along the Aleutian chain.? These systems are the early stages of large open ocean swells that make the north-facing side of the Hawaiian Islands so well known for big waves and big wave riding.? The great distance between these two regions allows swells to become more organized and gain?strength.? On the north-facing side there is a seafloor that more or less rises gradually. This results in slower breaking waves with less of a top to bottom curling effect.? When the seafloor rises abruptly, the shoaling process is sped up, leading to a much more intense breaking wave.? That is very much the case for the coasts of the Hawaiian Islands, in specific a spot called Jaws on the north shore of Maui.? The bottom topography of Jaws shows an abrupt underwater ridge that juts out towards the northwest.? This is often the direction from which Aleutian swell arrives, which makes Jaws an ideal large wave receptor.? Because the ridge peaks at about 20 feet, Jaws won't break until there is a swell large enough to provide such size.? When the conditions are correct, the relationship between Aleutian low pressure systems and the underwater ridge on the north of Maui creates some of the more impressive breaking waves on the planet.

Last month I was reminded of ?Surf?s Up!? while rereading said report from my departed friend Stan Salvigsen of Comstock Partners fame.? While that is the organization Stan, Michael Aronstein, and Charles Minter formed in the late 1980s, Stan?s investment career actually began in 1964 as an analyst with the Value Line Investment Survey.? Subsequently, he was an equity strategist at a succession of firms, including Dreyfus, Oppenheimer, C. J. Lawrence, and Merrill Lynch.? Stan wrote the most engaging, entertaining, colorful, and insightful strategy reports I have read in my 43 years in this business.? Select titles of his reports were: ?That Ain?t Mud on Your Boots Partner,? ?Revenge of the Nerds,? ?Homesick,? and my favorite, ?Surf?s Up!? ?Surf?s Up? showed pictures of a plethora of landside observers watching the few daring surfers willing to brave the 40-foot waves of Waimea Bay (see picture below).? Stan likened those surfers to the few investors who had the courage to buy stocks in the summer of 1982 and ride the ?big bull waves? that were likely going to occur as short-term interest rates declined from 22%.? It was a tempestuous time when my pleas to investors to buy stocks fell on deaf ears as their mantra was, ?Why should I buy stocks when I can get 22% in a money market fund??? My response was, ?That?s exactly why you should buy stocks!?? Stan died of a heart attack in 1996 at the tender age of 53 in the office of one of his best friends. ?He remains a true Wall Street icon and his keen-sighted investment strategy reports are missed by many of us.

I revisit ?Surf?s Up!? this morning because I think many investors are in the same positions now as they were 31 years ago; they are standing on the beach watching those few brave souls that had the courage to grab a surfboard and paddle out to catch the really big waves, aka buy stocks and ride the ?bull waves? that have rolled onto the investment beach since November of last year.? Indeed, to ride such waves you need to grab a board and get into the water.? Since the beginning of the year I have suggested one way to timidly approach those ?bull waves? was to decide how much money you wanted to commit to equities or mutual funds, say $100,000.? Then break that amount into four separate pieces and commit the first $25,000 tranche today.? Next, determine some point in time where you will buy the second tranche, say six weeks later, irrespective of whether the market is up or down, and so on for the remaining two tranches.

Review: Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Mouse - Destructoid

There's so many options for mice out there, it's tough to narrow down what you actually need. With options for everyday use, gaming, image editing, and everything in-between, sometimes things can get confusing. Enter the Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Mouse, which is built for precision.

As soon as I gripped the G700s, something felt a bit off. It's a rather bulky design that doesn't look the best, but as we know, initial looks and impressions can be deceiving.

Product: Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Mouse
Manufacturer: Logitech
Input: USB
MSRP: $99.99

My initial negative vibe with the G700s went away after a few short hours, as my hand had actually gotten used to the grip, and I found it extremely comfortable from then on out. The off-putting "lightning bolt" design can't be helped of course, but in terms of pure comfort, I was extremely surprised at the quality of the texture grip around my fingers, and the physical feedback from the material. Specifically, even the buttons feel great; there's a very light feedback on the thumb buttons that doesn't get too "clicky," but lets you know that you triggered it.

The G700s comes with a tiny nano-receiver that plugs into a USB port for the wireless connection, and a Micro-USB cable in case you need an extension for charging the AA rechargeable batteries. It is a normal cable and not braided, which was my only real complaint, since I've gotten used to the latter. Still, I haven't had any real issues with the cable itself -- it's fairly sturdy.

If you want to use a replacement cord, any micro-to-USB connection will work, making the mouse fairly flexible for use anywhere. During my testing, I had no issues with the wireless connection or the cable, and the nano-receiver is a dedicated line, creating a 1ms latency that makes this mouse reliably accurate with no movement hiccups to speak of.

I was utterly confused at first as to why the scroll wheel was so sensitive, but then I found out the mouse featured dual mode scrolling -- meaning, you hit a button near the wheel, and it switches the wheel's sensitivity. By default the other buttons on the G700s allow you to raise and lower your DPI, switch profiles, and so on, but you can customize the twelve buttons (thirteen if you count the scroll wheel tilt) to anything else.

To my surprise, it was extremely responsive for a wireless mouse -- as in, one of the best I've ever handled. I mainly tested with FPS and RTS play, and the accuracy I experienced previously from image editing and everyday use translated over to gaming quite nicely.

Thankfully, Logitech Gaming Software (LGS) is supported for the G700s. You can utilize the software to build five profiles, which allow you to customize DPI settings, power modes, and multi-key macros. The mouse also houses a tiny three light LED display on the left side (in plain sight and not blocked by fingers), which shows battery level in green.

It seems as if the mouse was designed more for performance than battery life, as the G700s will last around 8-10 hours with pure constant gaming use before you have to plug it in. That shouldn't be an issue for most competitive gamers though, who will have their mouse plugged in anyways for 100% reliability. For everything else non-gaming related, I was able to use it for days on end without a need for a single recharge.

I was previously using the Razer Mamba for my review rig, but over the course of a week of testing, I've slowly acclimated over to the G700s. It took a bit to get used to and doesn't look the prettiest, but it's extremely comfortable to the touch, especially now that I've slowly adjusted the settings to suit my needs. If you already have a G700, there may not be enough here to warrant an upgrade, but if you're in the market for a gaming mouse, Logitech is pretty much always a solid go-to -- the G700s included.

Living with a Chronic Disease - Mental Health and Anxiety Blog ...

hank?s point? of view in this video is THE ?new normal?.

Thanks so much, I have a chronic disease that means I lose allot of my hair, and its been almost a year that? I have been dealing with it and im becoming more accustomed to my ?new normal?

Not being able to tie my hair up without the people around me seeing hideous bald patches, or walking or running on windy days when my hair flicks back..

To other people it seems like such a tiny thing, its ?just hair?, but especially as a girl? It can be really degrading

?That?s the thing about being a person.?

The older I get the more I realize that my? happiness is ultimately connected to my ability to adapt to my new normal.

i have a chronic disorder called Hypopituitarism. which is caused when pituitary? glands don?t produce the right amount of hormones. it makes it basically impossible to loose weight, and you gain weight almost insistently. i was diagnosed at 13. i am 15 now. up until my diagnoses i did everything in my power to loose weight. being the fat one in the family wasn?t fun. now i have a disorder that makes it impossible to stop being the fat one in the family. the most i can do is maintain my weight.

Thank you so much for this? video. My daughter has several incurable diseases and she was diagnosed at 15. She is so strong everyday. People who have not been touched by these life events can be so utterly clueless and frustrating. In the world of the new normal, just getting through an average day is often a heroic effort. It is inspiring to hear from someone who has achieved success while dealing with an incurable medical condition.

Hank blushing/getting emotional? when he talks about Katherine. Damn, I wish I had love like that.

I?m only fifteen and I?ve racked up some pretty severe scoliosis, a touch of pain amplification syndrome, and I?ve just recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It sucks but thankfully some of the symptoms I have that are caused by fibromyalgia are eased with aqua therapy. If only they could invent? some drug that made my nervous system stop freaking out?

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (like schizophrenia + bipolar disorder) about a year and a half ago. Helping my friends and family to understand what I am experiencing is also not easy. We have such a stigma about mental illnesses in our culture that I often feel very uncomfortable trying to explain my panic attacks, mood swings, and delusions to my close friends, even more? so to the students I tutor. I really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this issue, Hank.

I loved this video. I?m sixteen years old and I got diagnosed with Crohn?s about 5 months ago. It? sucks and is scary, but hearing other peoples similar stories really helps. :)

I cannot thank you enough for this video! I myself have? Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue and Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which is EXACTLY as much fun as it sounds. I?m brewing up a video response but for now, just a very heartfelt thank you from someone (myself) dealing with chronic illness every day.

Thank you for this vlog Hank, it has inspired me to leave my very first coment.
As a birthday gift to me this year, I went to the Dr over a rash I have and to my suprise the Dr wasn?t the least concerned. She was concerned with an unrelated area. I have a treatable, but chronic type of skin cancer, the meds are kicking my? butt and I can?t get too far from the toilet ect?
Thanks for showing me a beter way of looking at it.
I survived having kids, this should be able to do this too.
Again thank

i can?t say i know what you?re going through in the least, but i do hope that you find happiness in whatever normal it is you? live in and that you keep it.

poorly worded youtube comments made purely? out of emotion! ASSEMBLE!

i have bad incontinence issues, and until this video i have never in my life (i have spina bifida, so? this has been lifelong) been able to come to terms with it. i?m starting to come to now because of this video, which i find to be VERY courageous, especially given how? well, NORMAL your other videos seem to be. normal in comparison to how having something like having IBD must make you feel all the time. now i know that i CAN be normal, and not be ashamed of it. thank you hank. :)

U have ibd, I have ibs, I have the same bathroom needs. I?ve had it forever, sadly have to tell my teachers every year that I have to use the bathroom when needed however many? times as needed, I also have five other disorders which makes it more difficult lol

Thank? you for opening my mind to sufferers of IBD Hank. It?s a wonderful thing when the population is educated therefore (hopefully) sympathetic to chronic diseases such as this. God bless you x

I?ve had CVID for the past 4 years and I?ve been trying to have a better outlook on life since then and I connected with you on a lot of what you said and I guess what I?m trying to say is thank you for making this because I would never have guessed that a person as awesome as you and someone I look up to so much has had problems that made him feel like he wasn?t normal and that?s my goal: To be someone no one would ever guess has a chronic disease and I hope I can pull it off as well as you? did

They almost thought I had Celiac Disease but the? tests came out negative. You have no idea how much I want to give you a hug right now.

Same here. Dermatillomania as? well. People have a hard time understanding that it?s a compulsive disorder, and not a ?bad habit.?

?in case I poop in my pants? PMSL! Hank. I love you. You? have such a refreshing outlook on life. You make me smile :)

Wow, Hank. Thank you. Really, thank you. I?ve never thought of my situation as normal. I?ve actually always thought myself as not normal, and? I?ve wished multiple times that I could become normal. A long time ago, some things happened, and long story short, I don?t have parents anymore. I?ve always looked at people who are with their parents and thought ?I wish I were normal like them.? But with this ?new normal? concept you talked about, I realized I am normal. It?s different, but it?s normal.

Thanks Hank. I had UC for the first 27 yrs of my life, then I saw a specialist that told me it was actually Crohn?s Disease (in both small and large intestine). Yep chronic disease is really a trip (to the bathroom, a lot) Those of you with symptoms as Hank described, should not put off seeking help and getting a diagnosis from the BEST Gastroenterologist you can. It DOES make a difference, it can make ALL the difference in your life. Been there, did that, am doing better 20? yrs on.

I have trichotillomania?..for those of you who don?t want to look it up, it?s an? impulse disorder that causes one to pull their hair out.

omg. you might have just? answered my ailments exactly?guess im off to the Dr?s

I have chronic back pain. I just say ?Well I have a hernia so excuse me,? and I lay on the floor.

Constant pain is awful. Thank you so much for sharing!! I watch this whenever I start to go crazy from? ouch-ness.

I have Celiac Disease.?

I have familial polyposis but? won?t show symptoms until my 30?s..my dad and aunt have it too. It sucks because people don?t, and can?t understand. Thank you for making this so the diagnosis doesn?t seem so bleak. :)

When you said ?if you have IBD you know what im talking about? i felt? so much less alone in this world that revolves around Ulcerative Colitis all the time. Thank you.

I have a chronic disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa which is causing the rods and cones on my retina to slowly die away. It? sucks. Because it?s a degenerative disease, it will slowly continue to get worse over the course of my life until I go completely blind sometime over the next 20 years. Chronic diseases are terrible.

Experiments,Emotions,Experiences with food: The Coffee Bean ...

There are several coffee brands and cafes but what makes CBTL a cut above the rest.? Read on..

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf ?(CBTL) is the?biggest private specialty coffee and tea retailer in USA. In their own words they select "only the one percent of finest Arabica coffee beans and finest hand plucked whole leaf teas". They are based in Los Angeles and opened their first cafe in Brentwood, California?in 1963. Since then they has spread across 900 international locations and started operations in India in 2008. They started their first outlet in Bangalore last year and recently opened another lounge in Phoenix Market City.?

?

2013 being their 50th Year, they have commenced year long celebrations with their new menu with a variety of gourmet bites and healthy options.?They have also unveiled a new logo for this occasion that literally shows their passion for tea and coffee.Definitely ?CBTL leaves a high mark in the way it treats its customers.?

I had been to Phoenix cafe for a review and was floored by its warmth and coziness. You can choose a corner, order your elixir and feel comfy. Whether you go alone or with a group you will love it. While you are there, you can go through the 'Tea Guide' & 'Coffee Guide' and understand what you've ordered ?or about to. Each guide gives you insight about the art of brewing coffee and tea and even the background of tealeaf and coffee bean used in the cafe.?

The menu tells us about classic coffee and teas and there is an impressive line of Indian tea as well. Otherwise they import their coffee bean and tealeaf from US. So be assured that you are getting the same taste as your counterpart in Israel or US or any other CBTL cafes across the world.?

Me being a tea person, I went for Tropical Passion Tea Latte and also tried the Genmaicha Green Tea. The former was combination of Ceylon tea, passion fruit & guava flavor along with marigold flowers. It was perfect for a rainy day. Genmaicha Green Tea on the other hand had delicate Sencha tea with toasted rice and puffed rice. Now this is a tea which everybody wont appreciate. The aroma of toasted rice and puffed rice might be a little too strong but don't worry, they have a wonderful list and you can definitely find your favourite one among them.

Along with this you can really have a look into the bites options which is very tempting. I tried few items ?such as the soft chewy granola bars along with grab n go paneer tikka sandwich and penne arrabiata. The sandwich (or all Grab N Go Sandwiches) comes with store made potato wafers and a salad and is definitely a winner. The pasta sauces are all homemade and are definitely a cut above the rest.?

The operations Manager at CBTL, Mr Zameer claimed that they even have a vegetarian caesar salad to cater to Indian tastebuds. And yes, it was definitely a refreshing salad.

Did You know:

CBTL is the first one to launch ice blended drinks. An ice blended drink is made fresh for every order and has their speciality coffee/tea extract blended with custom made ice cubes and speciality flavouring resulting in smoother, richer and creamier drink but still with the full bodied flavour of tea/coffee. In other words its not just coffee shaken/stirred/poured over ice.

And now do you really want to know what is my elixir at CBTL?

It was refreshing Fruit infusion ice blended Tea with Swedish Berries.

Herbal & Fruit Tea Infusions are naturally caffeine free and are made with large pieces of dried fruit with fruit flavours added. These are best alternative to regular tea or coffee. Talking about my elixir,?Swedish?berries tea mix is a blend of hibiscus, raisins and mixed berries with natural fruity flavour and a sweet, fragrant aroma.

I can't describe to you the refreshing taste of this. I went for another one and am still yearning for more. Also recommended is Caramel ice blended which is now on my waiting list.?

All this makes ?CBTL a cut above the rest. The location and the excellent ambiance are just part of it. Also to be mentioned is the 'coffee to go' containers a speciality of ?CBTL. All beverages and snacks in CBTL are halal and kosher certified. Only filtered water is used to brew tea and coffee. The ice cubes used in "ice blended" drinks are custom made for CBTL.The menu has desi options also to cater to various taste. The wi-fi /internet is free in CBTL lounges as well.?

No wonder they won the "Best Cafe Award - Gold" at in India International Coffee Festival , 2012.

So what are you waiting for.? Do visit CBTL and enjoy a loooooooong Coffee/Tea Break

Locations:

  • Phoenix Market City, Whitefield
  • 1 MG Mall, MG Road

Ryan Lochte Reality Show: What Would Ryan Do? (VIDEO)

Sure, he may be the man who stood next to Michael Phelps as they cleaned house in the most recent Olympic games, but this guy has a life of his own. That became super clear when he was out partying after winning medals in London with his swimming pals. He was the cute one who was seen in and out of London nightclubs after an impressive showing at the Olympics. Again, he was overshadowed by Phelps, but has still somehow managed to get some attention. He has a new reality show called “What Would Ryan Do?” Yes, it’s a cheesy title, and it’s definitely a little ego-maniacal — but so is Ryan. That’s the point. The show chronicles his life at the top, which includes family, friends, dating, and partying. The strange part is that he hopes the show can raise what he calles “swimming awareness.” I guess that’s the idea that we should care about swimming other than the Olympics. Sorry, Ryan, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Either way, he is on a mission. As for his favorite moment on the show so far, Ryan says it was his arranged date with Carmen Electra: “I mean, [...]

Researchers discover that stem cell senescence drives aging

Friday, April 19, 2013

Declining levels of the protein BubR1 occur when both people and animals age, and contribute to cell senescence or deterioration, weight loss, muscle wasting and cataracts. Mayo Clinic researchers have shown that adult progenitor or stem cells -- important for repair and regeneration of skeletal muscle and maintenance of healthy fat tissue -- are subject to cellular senescence, and that clearance of these cells limits age-related deterioration of these tissues. The findings appear today online in the journal Cell Reports.

BubR1 is an essential part of the mitotic checkpoint, the mechanism controlling proper cell division or mitosis. Without sufficient levels of BubR1, chromosomal imbalance will occur, leading to premature aging and cancer. Using mutant mice that expressed low levels of BubR1, the researchers found development of dysfunctional tissue with impaired cell regeneration. In analyzing the progenitor populations in skeletal muscle and fat, they found that a subset of progenitors was senescent and that the tumor suppressor p53 was acting to prevent this from happening through activation of p21.

"Earlier we discovered that senescent cells accumulate in tissues with aging and that removal of these cells delays age-related functional decline in these tissues," says Jan van Deursen, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic molecular biologist and senior author of the study. "The key advance of the current study is that the progenitor cell populations are most sensitive for senescence, thereby interfering with the innate capacity of the tissue to counteract degeneration."

Not only do the findings contribute to knowledge on cell senescence as it relates to aging and related diseases, but understanding the mechanisms may lead to future therapies, say the researchers.

Justice official: No reading of Miranda rights

(AP) ? A Justice Department official says the Boston Marathon bombing suspect will not be read his Miranda rights because the government is invoking a public safety exception.

That official and a second person briefed on the investigation says 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will be questioned by a special interrogation team for high-value suspects. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to disclose the information publicly.

The public safety exception permits law enforcement officials to engage in a limited and focused unwarned interrogation of a suspect and allows the government to introduce the statement as evidence in court. The public safety exception is triggered when police officers have an objectively reasonable need to protect the police or the public from immediate danger.

Broadband internet arrives in California's Gold Country through white spaces deployment

Broadband internet arrives in California's Gold Country through white spaces deployment

While select outfits race to make satellite broadband an acceptable solution for those who need ping times south of three digits, there's another game in town looking to quietly revolutionize rural access. As LTE slowly rolls out to major metropolitan areas in the United States, vacated spectrum is allowing companies like Carlson Wireless to offer up another option. TV white spaces -- unused TV channels freed up after the analog-to-digital transition of 2009 -- have long since been eyed as the answer for distributing high-speed internet to areas that aren't economical to reach via wireline, or are otherwise shunned by conventional wireless operators.

Armed with an FCC-granted Special Temporary Authority to validate the efficacy of the product in real-world scenarios, Carlson has partnered with Cal.net in order to bring internet to sections of California's Gold Country; the project comprises multiple transmission sites delivering broadband to several hundred heretofore un-serviceable subscribers in El Dorado County. There's no word on pricing, but we're sure hoping it's a runaway hit -- we can think of plenty of gorgeous locales in this country that could stand a pinch of internet. (Yellowstone National Park, we're looking at you.)

J&J Q1 profit falls 10 pct despite higher sales

Johnson & Johnson's first-quarter profit fell by just over 10 percent as increased sales were offset by higher costs for production, marketing and administration.

The maker of Tylenol, prescription drugs and medical devices said Tuesday that it earned $3.5 billion, or $1.22 per share, down 10.6 percent from $3.9 billion, or $1.41 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding litigation and acquisition-related charges totaling $610 million, income would have been $4.1 billion, or $1.44 per share. That beat analysts' forecast by 4 cents per share.

Revenue totaled $17.5 billion, up 8.5 percent from $16.1 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected sales of $17.46 billion.

U.S. sales were up 11.2 percent as the company, based in New Brunswick, N.J., returned more of its recalled nonprescription drugs to store shelves. International sales grew by 6.3 percent.

Sales climbed 10 percent to $7.06 billion in the medical devices and diagnostics business, J&J's biggest unit. That was partly because of new products acquired last year with orthopedics device maker Synthes, J&J's biggest acquisition ever at $19.1 billion.

Prescription drug revenue rose 10.4 percent to $6.77 billion, led by Invega Sustenna for schizophrenia, three drugs for immune disorders and two new medicines likely to become blockbusters. Those are Xarelto for preventing blood clots and strokes, and prostate cancer pill Zytiga.

Sales of consumer health products edged up 2.2 percent to $3.68 billion.

Production costs jumped 13 percent to $5.55 billion, mainly for an inventory charge related to the Synthes acquisition in 2012's second quarter.

In addition, the company continues to make factory upgrades and undergoes increased regulatory inspections after issuing about three dozen product recalls since 2009, mostly for nonprescription medicines. That's kept Tylenol, Motrin and many other J&J staples out of stores until recently. But CEO Alex Gorsky said in a statement that the company is returning a reliable supply of its over-the-counter medicines to stores.

Veteran broadcaster Pat Summerall dies at 82

The brilliance of Pat Summerall was always what he didn't say. He didn't have to be the loudest or most verbose guy in the broadcast booth. But he was the best.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Summerall has died at the age of 82. The report said he died in the hospital where he was recovering from hip surgery.

Summerall was a former NFL player. He was most memorably a New York Giants kicker, playing in the legendary 1958 title game against the Colts, and before that he kicked for the Detroit Lions and Chicago Cardinals. He was a good kicker in the NFL. Then he became a great announcer. He was one of the NFL's distinctive voices as the league grew by leaps and bounds. That might not be coincidental.

Summerall and Tom Brookshier, and then later (and more famously) Summerall and John Madden were the soundtrack of every big Sunday game in the NFL for decades. Summerall and Madden in particular made calling a big NFL game an art form.

Summerall, whose playing career spanned from 1952-61, and whose broadcasting career went from 1962 to 2002, was an icon in the NFL for many decades, especially behind the microphone.

Summerall, with his economy of words and calm delivery, was the perfect compliment to Madden's theatrics. He didn't need to scream over a big play to let the audience know it was a big play. He let the pictures and sounds speak, and also allowed Madden be the star. A lot of today's announcers could learn from it.

Take a look and listen to the first quarter of the NFC championship game between the 49ers and Cowboys at the end of the 1993 season, which was also the last game for Summerall and Madden on their longtime home of CBS, before moving to Fox:

They were tremendous together. Summerall worked 16 Super Bowls, a well-deserved record. Games always felt bigger when Madden and Summerall were calling them.

Summerall also scored 563 points as a NFL kicker. His best season was 1959, when he was 20-of-29 on field goals, leading the NFL in field goals, attempts and percentage. He also played some on the defensive side of the ball in his NFL career.

"Pat was my broadcasting partner for a long time, but more than that he was my friend for all of these years," Madden said in a statement. "We never had one argument, and that was because of Pat. He was a great broadcaster and a great man. He always had a joke. Pat never complained and we never had an unhappy moment. He was something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be."

Later in life he was open about his well-publicized battle with alcoholism, spreading a message that may have helped someone else. After spending time at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1992, he was reportedly sober for the last 21 years of his life.

Summerall also was a familiar voice on Masters golf broadcasts, U.S. Open tennis tournaments, and occasionally basketball and boxing. But he was at his best in the broadcast booth on Sundays in the fall. With all due respect to the other NFL announcing greats like Ray Scott, Al Michaels, Curt Gowdy and Dick Enberg, nobody ever did that job better than Summerall.

Alan Gordon Apologizes For Gay Slur, Will Johnson Responds With Game-Winning Goal (VIDEO)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- After Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon directed a slur at Will Johnson, the Timbers midfielder responded with the game-winning goal.

Johnson's goal on a free kick in the 78th minute gave Portland a 1-0 win on Sunday night. It was the Timbers' second straight victory, moving the team to 2-1-3 under new coach Caleb Porter.

Gordon was ejected in the second half after receiving a pair of yellow cards involving fouls on other players. But minutes earlier, he was seen on the television broadcast using a slur toward Johnson.

After the match, Gordon released a statement through the team.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who watched tonight's match on NBC Sports Network. The language I used came during a heated moment and does not reflect my feelings toward the gay and lesbian community. I made a mistake and I accept full responsibility for my actions," the statement read.

Johnson was diplomatic.

"I think it's probably better that I don't comment on that," he said. "It's a very sensitive matter. I'd prefer the league go through with their protocol."

It's standard procedure for Major League Soccer to review the video of matches that involve a red card.

Gordon was escorted from the locker room after the game by team personnel and did not speak with reporters after match.

The loss dropped the Earthquakes to 2-3-2.

Forward Steven Lenhart was back in San Jose's starting lineup after returning from a partially torn meniscus last weekend as a reserve. The striker missed San Jose's first five matches after offseason surgery. That meant the Earthquakes' so-called Bash Brothers ? Lenhart and Gordon ? were both starting for the first time this season.

But Gordon was sent off in the 68th minute after getting a second yellow card, for elbowing Timbers defender Mikael Silvestre in the face, causing a bloody lip. Gordon was also received a yellow in the 41st minute for a foul on Diego Chara.

Video replay appeared to show that Gordon directed a slur at Johnson a few minutes before his ejection. Such a comment would bring an automatic three-match suspension by MLS.

Some 10 minutes later, Johnson hit a free kick from just outside the penalty arc that sailed over the wall and past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

"It doesn't work every time," Johnson said. "But when it does, it's nice."

Earlier in the day, Porter had texted Johnson asking, "Why don't you hit a free kick tonight?" The coach was floored when it happened.

"Everybody's going to talk about the free kick," Johnson said. "But it's really about the team."

The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Portland missed an opportunity when Ryan Johnson's header was snagged in midair by Busch in the 43rd minute.

The Timbers dominated possession (62.6 percent) in the first half, but matched San Jose with just four shots. It was a physical match, as evidenced by the yellow cards. Four minutes after Chara was fouled by Gordon, Chara got a yellow card for a foul on Rafael Baca.

Following the game, Yallop questioned why officials waited to make the call to eject Gordon until after the video scoreboard had shown a replay, firing up the crowd at Jeld-Wen.

"You should let the officials call the game," he said, adding that he had not seen the replay.

Portland was without midfielder Diego Valeri, who was elbowed in the face last weekend against the Dynamo and only participated in light workouts this week because of the league's concussion protocol. The Timbers also lost defender David Horst to a fractured right tibia during the Houston game. He is out six months.

The Timbers also announced shortly before the game that defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste would not start because of a right adductor strain. Futty Danso started in his place.

Portland is 2-0-4 against the Earthquakes. Sunday's game was the first of a home-and-home with San Jose, and the two teams meet again next Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.
