Dr. Karen Frindell will give a presentation about the sciences for the SRJC Salon.

Anna Hect, Staff Writer
February 26, 2013

The JC Salon debuts this semester with talks by Dr. Frank Chong, Dr. Karen Frindell and Eric Thompson.

The term ?salon? is derived from the French word describing an apartment or large central space where socialites regularly hosted discussions on intellectual and artistic matters.

Following this style, Santa Rosa Junior College?s English department introduces the Salon this spring with a series of talks from colleagues around campus.

First in the series is chemistry instructor Dr. Karen Frindell and her March 5 presentation on the sciences.

She will discuss chemistry as an aesthetic experience and her love for the periodic table of the elements.

Dr. Frindell hopes the Salon will attract students and faculty alike so that ?they take advantage of the opportunity to listen to their instructors and colleagues speak about the disciplines they love in a more open and informal setting.?

Next in the line-up is SRJC President Dr. Frank Chong who will deliver a talk on administration April 11.

?I?m going to talk about leadership because administrators do things right and leaders do the right things,? Chong said.

Concluding the series is humanities instructor Eric Thompson who will present his lecture May 7 on humanities and religion.

?That?s a subject so important, central and crucial that greater knowledge of it is arguably an emergency in the world today. Most people in the world are religious, so they claim, and religion is at the bottom of a lot of violence, bigotry,? Thompson said.

More information on the JC Salon will be provided on santarosa.edu/insider as the dates approach.

1 wounded in shooting near South Carolina college campus

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) ? A South Carolina college spokeswoman says one person has been wounded in a shooting at a school apartment complex near campus, and a lockdown of campus buildings has been ordered.

Coastal Carolina University spokeswoman Martha Hunn said the gunman was still at large Tuesday night.

She said dispatchers received a call around 7:20 p.m. regarding a shooting at University Place, which is adjacent to S.C. Highway 544.

Hunn said the victim was transported to Grand Strand Regional Hospital.

Students were allowed to leave classroom buildings late Tuesday, but residence halls remained on lockdown.

According to the school's website, University Place houses almost 2,000 students.

Coastal Carolina University has an enrollment of slightly more than 9,000 students. The school, founded in 1954, is in Conway, 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

Variety dropping daily publication and paywall

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Variety, the venerable trade paper that has covered Hollywood for more than a century, is dropping its daily print edition and replacing it with a weekly publication starting next month.

The publication also will have a new management structure featuring three editors-in-chief and will remove the paywall that was put up on its website three years ago.

"It was an interesting experiment that didn't work. We look forward to welcoming back longtime Variety readers when the paywall drops March 1," said Jay Penske, the chairman and CEO of Variety's parent company.

Variety's last daily print edition will be published March 18. A Tuesday-only publication will debut March 26 and will be augmented throughout the year by several special editions reporting on the industry's many awards shows and other topics of interest to Hollywood movers and shakers.

"We remain committed to a print edition of Variety and are excited that it will expand in size and scope of coverage," the paper's publisher, Michelle Sobrino, said in a story Tuesday on the paper's website (http://bit.ly/YVaMUr ).

Variety also announced that three veteran Hollywood journalists, Claudia Eller, Cynthia Littleton and Andrew Wallenstein, are assuming the titles editor-in-chief.

Eller joins the paper after 20 years with the Los Angeles Times, where she was most recently entertainment news editor. Littleton was most recently deputy editor of Variety and Wallenstein was the trade paper's television editor.

Executive editor Steven Gaydos will continue to oversee Variety's editorial department. Tim Gray, the current editor-in-chief, will remain in a leadership role, overseeing special projects and expansion of international coverage.

Variety has been a fixture in Hollywood since its founding in 1905, but like other traditional print publications has struggled in recent years as news has moved to other formats.

It was purchased last year for $25 million by Penske Media Corp., which also owns the popular Hollywood website Deadline.

Question sent in: ?I was receiving workers compensation benefits ...

car crash

Question:

I had a back injury back in 2009 that lead me to get a lumbar fusion on 2010. Then I had another surgery in 2011 to remove the hardware because it was hurting me. After the second surgery I have been receiving medical treatment (pain injections, and pain medicine.) On Oct. 2012 I was involved in a car accident that created more pain, not only in my lower back but my upper back and neck. As soon as the insurance from the workers compensation injury noticed my car accident they stopped sending me my checks I was receiving before because of my car accident I was involved in. Can they do that? I live in Illinois and it wasn?t my fault (about the car accident). Thanks for the advice in advance.

Answer: The issue is whether the MVA is legally considered an intervening accident sufficient to break the chain of causal connection to your work accident. This is based on how the accident changed your symptoms, any changes in the doctor?s examination and x-ray/MRI findings. The insurance company stopped your checks so I expect the medical records do indicate that the accident aggravated your condition but there are cases that say that alone is not enough to stop the WC. Your WC may need to proceed to arbitration to get your benefits restarted and unfortunatley, that process could take 6 months or longer if either party appeals.

HBT: A-Rod's '09 World Series ring going up for sale

Via Michael O?Keefe of the New York Daily News:

The diamond-studded, 2009 World Series ring A-Rod gave his cousin?Yuri Sucart?? the man Rodriguez says talked him into using steroids ? will go on sale Monday, and sports memorabilia auctioneer Ken Goldin says it could fetch as much as $40,000.

Major League Baseball banned Sucart from the Yankees? facilities in the spring of 2009 after Rodriguez told reporters that he had experimented with performance-enhancing drugs in 2003 and that they were?administered?by his ?cousin Yuri.?

But it?s clear that the two have?maintained?a close relationship. Sucart was spotted on road trips with the Yankees in 2010 and 2011, and his name was discovered alongside A-Rod?s in the Biogenesis documents released last month by the Miami New Times. The ring has ?Rodriguez? emblazoned on one side.

Slovenia's Tina Maze clinches World Cup title

(AP) ? There was only one fitting way for Tina Maze to wrap up the overall World Cup title ? with another victory, and with plenty of time to spare.

She clinched her first crystal globe Sunday by winning a super-combined for eighth win of the season. So overpowering was her season that she clinched the overall trophy with nine races to go.

"It's really special because it's so difficult to win. For me, it's special to continue this level of skiing," said Maze, who celebrated with a cartwheel. "To be on the top is amazing. It's a great season for me. Even if there have been ups and downs I have always come back."

To Maze, it was also the perfect response to doubters back home in Slovenia. Some mocked her for having the audacity to dream about becoming the world's best skier.

"I think the people are realizing that the dream came true, that one year ago they were saying 'Ah, this Maze, she's making jokes when she says she will win a globe or something like that. Yeah, she's full of herself' and these kinds of things," Maze said. "In Slovenia, it's (the) mentality. It's better to be sometimes (more mainstream) than to go out (and be different) from the majority.

"I didn't want to be like everybody else. So I'm always looking for something else, something better, something different and I'm really proud of that."

Maze led the downhill and coasted home in the slalom after Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out of contention. She tied a season record with her 18th top-three finish, matching the podium mark set by Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden and Hanni Wenzel of Liechtenstein.

"I'm an emotional person, I didn't want to cry (on the podium)," Maze said, adding she felt sick before the slalom. "I went to the toilet six times before I started. A lot of people (were) sick and I guess I get something from them, too."

Maze has 1,844 points in the overall standings and looks all but certain to break the season record ?men or women ? of 2,000 held by Austrian great Hermann Maier.

Hoefl-Riesch is second in the overall standings but is 958 points behind and has no chance of closing the gap. Each victory is worth 100 points.

Lindsey Vonn, the four-time overall winner and defending champion, fell out of contention after she took a monthlong break because of an intestinal illness and then was done for the season after a knee injury at the world championships. Vonn is still third overall with 740 points.

"I'm really tired now, especially after a long day like today," the 29-year-old Maze said. "Today was so tough, I didn't know where I was. I almost went off the course twice. But I just managed to catch the gates. It's crazy."

She is also seeking to become only the third woman to have at least one win in all five disciplines in one season, and lacks only a downhill victory. She had a chance Saturday but finished fourth. She has two downhills remaining, starting next week in the German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Vonn won 12 races last season and Maze has a chance of matching that, although Swiss great Vreni Schneider's single-season World Cup record of 14 wins appears out of sight.

Nicole Hosp of Austria, the world championship bronze medalist in the super-combi, finished second. Countrywoman Michaela Kirchgasser took third place with a superb slalom run ? 42.66 seconds to Maze's 44.26.

"My target is to be focused until the end of the season because there are many small globes that are open and possible to get," Maze said. "I want to keep this level of skiing until the end, I don't want to go down, I want to keep it at the high level."

Hosp, the World Cup winner in 2007, lauded Maze's consistency.

"There are no words to describe Tina's amazing season," Hosp said.

Julia Mancuso came close to clinching the fourth super-combi podium of her career and her first in six years. But the American made a small mistake midway through, falling forward on her skis.

It seems only an injury can prevent Maze from breaking Maier's points record, set in 1999-2000. Vonn holds the women's record with 1,980 points from last season.

"It has been an extraordinary season for Tina," Kirchgasser said. "To be so far ahead in the points. Last time it was a man who won with more than 2,000 points, and I don't think Tina will be far off."

Maze's phenomenal season also includes three gold medals from the worlds in Schladming, Austria ? gold in super-G and silver in super-combi and giant slalom. She lost out on a second gold to Hoefl-Riesch and felt Sunday's win somewhat made up for that.

"I had that in mind because in Schladming I didn't do a good slalom," she said. "I didn't risk a lot and today I did different, so at the end it's a revenge, too, but the priority was better skiing from my side.

"It's a good slope. I had some troubles yesterday in downhill," Maze said. "I had some trouble on the top. But the rest of the hill is like a dream."

Ask HN: A patent troll is targeting my transit app | Hacker News

I created a transit app for the TTC in Toronto.

Yesterday, I received a package from Lemer & Company representing Dovden Investments, Ltd. The package claims that my app infriges their patents.

Patents:

http://brevets-patents.ic.gc.ca/opic-cipo/cpd/eng/patent/2363556/summary.html

I am reaching out to HN because I know there are many transit apps out there that have the same functionality: letting users know when the next bus will arrive using a third-party API (from NextBus, or GTFS Realtime for example).

So, if anyone has dealt with Dovden or has had a similar experience (or ArrivalStar in the US), please contact me at barum.rho@gmail.com

More details: My apps use the API provided by NextBus who apparently licensed these patents. The patents describe a system that includes a vehicle unit (GPS) and a central server that processes GPS locations, neither of which are part of my app. They offered a "discounted" licensing fee, but my apps have generated income nowhere near the amount.

Please upvote for a better chance of finding other transit app developers.

Italy urges high turnout in critical election for euro zone

ROME (Reuters) - Italy pressed citizens to get out and vote in one of the most closely watched elections in years on Sunday and Monday, with financial markets on edge at the prospect of a political stalemate that could reignite the euro zone debt crisis.

A campaigning ban kicked in at midnight on Friday after leaders held final rallies. Comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo stole the spotlight in Rome by attracting an estimated half a million people to hear his tirades against corrupt politicians and bankers.

The Interior Ministry urged some 47 million eligible voters to head to the polls and said it had made preparations for bad weather, including snow in some regions, to ensure that everyone could have the chance to cast their ballot.

"Elections are a fundamental moment for a democracy and we want all our citizens to experience them in the best way possible," Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri said in a video posted on the ministry's website.

A survey released on Tuesday said about 28 percent of Italians had yet to decide who to vote for, or were considering not voting at all. It showed about 5 million people were likely to make up their mind in the final days.

Final polls published two weeks ago showed center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani with a five-point lead, but analysts disagree about whether he will be able to form a stable majority that can push through the economic reforms Italy needs to exit recession.

Bersani is now thought to be just a few points ahead of center-right leader Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister who has promised tax refunds and staged a media blitz.

The success of Grillo's "Tsunami Tour" has added to the uncertainty. Huge crowds have turned out hear him rail against corruption and austerity, underlining the extent of popular rage against traditional parties and the capacity for his 5-Star Movement to shake up the elections.

"Grillo is saying the things that all ordinary Italians are thinking, he is giving us hope," said 41-year-old Luca Pennisi, who makes pastries for a cafe in the capital where several customers were still unsure who to vote for.

"It's time to change the system, get rid of the old politicians, and stop wasting public money," he said, adding that he had watched Grillo's final rally on the Internet and would definitely vote for his grouping.

Grillo was seen winning about 16 percent in the last polls, making his movement the third-largest electoral force. Experts believe he may have built on that score, helped by a strong online campaign and a string of scandals surrounding Italy's political elite.

Other leaders ended their campaigns on a much quieter note.

Berlusconi canceled a planned appearance at a Naples rally, blaming an eye problem. Bersani rounded off at a theatre in Rome, while outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, who is leading a centrist coalition, held a similar event in Florence.

The most likely - and many say the most stable and pro-reform result from the election - appears to be a governing alliance between Bersani and Monti, which would require the outgoing premier to win enough senators to boost the center-left.

AUSTERITY EFFECT

But Monti, an economics professor and darling of the markets, is believed to be fading after a lacklustre campaign, and some experts have said he may fall below the 8-percent threshold to win Senate seats in some regions.

Whatever government emerges from the vote will have the task of pulling Italy out of its longest recession for 20 years and reviving an economy that has been stagnant for two decades.

The main danger for Italy and the euro zone is that the election produces a weak government incapable of taking firm action, which is likely to rattle investors and could ignite a new debt crisis.

Monti replaced Berlusconi in November 2011 after the media billionaire brought the euro zone's third largest economy dangerously close to a Greek-style financial meltdown while he was embroiled in a series of scandals.

The former European Commissioner launched a tough programme of spending cuts, tax hikes and pension reform which helped to sharply reduce Italy's borrowing costs and restore the country's credibility abroad.

But economic austerity has fuelled anger among Italians grappling with rising unemployment and shrinking disposable incomes, encouraging many to turn to Grillo, who has tapped into a national mood of disenchantment.

Other Italians, however, remain unconvinced by what they see as populist tactics by the shaggy-haired 64-year-old, who toured Italy in a camper van, yelling himself hoarse at packed meetings.

"My vote will go to Monti for a very simple reason, I think he is the only serious proposition," said Rome resident Vito, who was on a stroll through the city on Saturday.

Did Nintendo benefit from releasing the Wii U before Microsoft and Sony?

Many people would already consider the Wii U a failure based on the January NPD numbers. Doom and gloom is the order of the day, very similar to the way annalists chronicled the demise of the 3DS early on in its lifecycle. Clearly Nintendo benefited by launching the 3DS before the Sony Playstation Vita, judging by the latest sales data, but can the same be said for the Wii U?

What do you think? Did Nintendo do right by releasing the Wii U ahead of Microsoft and Sony?

Releasing a console first doesn?t necessarily mean success for any console manufacturer. One only needs to look to the Dreamcast for the evidence of that. The Wii U surely hasn?t gained as much traction as Nintendo has hoped in the few months that the console has been on the market. The lack of new, compelling games has certainly hurt the console in the short term, but does that mean that the console will be a failure in the long run? Not in the slightest. Why is that? Because Nintendo is Nintendo.

Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Pikmin, Metroid. All of these properties are games that will only be possible on Nintendo consoles. Nintendo banks on this, they understand that there are consumers who only buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games. This has been the case since the beginning of time. I have a buddy that only has 6 games for his Wii. Wii Sports (which barely counts), Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. All Nintendo published titles, and all arguably some of the best games released this generation.

In this aspect, Nintendo could certainly survive solely off of their own independent properties if it was completely necessary. Sure third party titles such as Boom Blox and Carnival Games certainly help the bottom line, but if it comes down to it, Nintendo could survive on their own.

So should Nintendo have waited to release the Wii U until Sony and Microsoft revealed their plans for their own home consoles? Not necessarily. Sure they may have been able to better understand what the PS4 and Xbox 720 were able to produce spec-wise, but Nintendo hasn?t necessarily been concerned with that as of late. What is really important to Nintendo is that their consoles offer the best experience to play Nintendo games on, and in that aspect they have consistently succeeded.

If I only played Nintendo published games on the Wii U, I would be a happy camper. If the Wii U doesn?t sell quite as well as the next Microsoft or Sony box, I won?t lose much sleep. All that matters to me is that I get to play the next Zelda and Mario title on the console, and that they are as excellent as their predecessors were.

Rick Scott to expand Medicaid coverage in Florida

Florida Governor Rick Scott made a surprise announcement on Wednesday that he has agreed to accept billions of federal dollars to expand Medicaid in the state.

The new coverage, which will be fully paid for by the federal government for the first three years, could bring health coverage to an additional 1 million Floridians, reports the Miami Herald.

"Quality health care services must be accessible and affordable for all ? not just those in certain ZIP codes or tax brackets," Scott told reporters at a hastily called news conference at the Governor?s Mansion.

"No mother, or father, should despair over whether or not they can afford ? or access ? the health care their child needs. While the federal government is committed to paying 100 percent of the cost of new people in Medicaid, I cannot, in good conscience, deny the uninsured access to care."

Scott agreed to the expansion only after Florida was granted a conditional waiver to allow a private party to manage Medicaid statewide. The expansion would also be phased out after three years and need to be re-approved by the legislature, reports Reuters.

?It is not a white flag of surrender to government-run health care,? he said.

The announcement is a significant policy shift for the Republican governor and former hospital executive who spent millions of his own money to try and defeat the Affordable Care Act.

He joins six other Republican governors who have agreed to accept federal dollars for the health care expansion.

According to POLITICO, it's the biggest sign yet that Republicans are grudgingly accepting that Obamacare is the law of the land.

Many of Florida's conservatives were not happy with the Governor's change of heart.

"I am flabbergasted. This is a guy who, before he was a candidate for governor, started an organization to fight 'Obamacare' in the expansion of medical entitlements. This is a guy who said it will never happen on his watch. Well, here it is," Slade O'Brien, Florida director of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity, told the Associated Press.

The expansion will extend coverage to families whose incomes equal 138 percent of the federal poverty level ? about$32,000 for a family of four.

For the first time, single individuals making up to $15,000 will also be covered, reports AP.

Kyocera Torque hitting Sprint March 8th, carrying $100 price tag and Bear Grylls' seal of approval

We first heard about -- and went to town on -- Kyocera's latest smartphone toward the end of last month. Thankfully, the Torque happens to be an "ultra-rugged" device, meaning its creators didn't mind at all when we tossed it against a wall or two. The LTE-packing Ice Cream Sandwich handset was made to the Military Standard 810G standard, so you can drop it, get it dirty or even submerge it in up to a meter of water for half an hour or so and go back for a little more Fruit Ninja -- it's also been placed in the hands of Mr. Man vs. Wild himself, Bear Grylls. The handset will be tumbling onto Sprint March 8th, with a $100 price (post two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate).

Sony's 'PlayStation App' for iOS and Android adds second screen to PS4

Sony is working on a second screen app to work with its upcoming PlayStation 4 that will let users use their smartphones and tablets as companion devices while playing, and watch their friends? gameplay wherever they have an internet connection. The new software is called PlayStation App (not to be confused with the existing PlayStation Official App), and while there aren?t many details right now, Sony suggests that users will be able to use it to do things like view in-game maps while they?re playing. The feature sounds similar to what Microsoft is doing with SmartGlass, which lets users explore maps in Forza Horizon from their tablets, for instance.

The app will let you buy new games on the road

Gaikai CEO David Perry spoke for a few minutes this morning about the PlayStation 4?s new tools for spectators, like the ability to let your friends ?look over your shoulder? by broadcasting your gameplay using the controller?s new share button. The PlayStation App will then let those friends watch the streaming gameplay footage, making use of the new console?s ?always on? video compression. Finally, the app will let you buy new games on the road and download them ?directly to the console at home,? presumably meaning they?ll be ready to play when you walk in the door. All in all, it sounds like a colossal improvement over Sony?s existing app, which is little more than a viewer for your trophies and the online status of your PSN friends. Sony says the app is coming out for iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets ? unsurprisingly, there?s no reference to Microsoft's Windows 8.

Gay couple told to take their wedding plans elsewhere

by JONATHAN BETZ

WFAA

Updated today at 8:36 AM

EVERMAN ? Ben Allen would like to consider himself just like any other groom planning a wedding. For weeks he?s been ordering flowers and discussing decorations.

But on Monday ? when he called to book a venue for his reception ? he ran into problems when it became clear he was marrying a man.

?She immediately responded with, ?Well, no, I don?t do that,? and that was just the end of that,? Allen said. ?It felt like somebody had just hit me in the face.?

Allen, 26, and his partner of eight years, Justin Hudgins, 29, hoped to book a wedding reception for 150 guests at the All Occasion Party Place near Fort Worth. But Allen said he was told by phone and by e-mail the business won?t serve gays.

?It is because of God that I will not be a part in your reception, and I know he loves you, but not what you are doing,? an employee at the hall, Robin Hearne, wrote to Hudgins in an e-mail he provided to News 8. ?I simply said I can not rent to you which is also my right.?

The case is the latest outrage among activists frustrated in a state still far from legalizing same-sex marriage or strengthening gay rights.

?Refusing to provide services or public accommodations to anyone solely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is wrong,? said Chuck Smith with Equality Texas. ?Texans are proud people who believe in hard work and treating each other with dignity and respect.?

Still, lawyers say what All Occasion Party Place did is completely legal. Unlike race or religion, federal and state laws don?t consider sexual orientation a protected class.

?There?s nothing illegal about it,? said Peter Schulte, a Dallas attorney who has handled gay rights cases, but is not working on this one. ?If a restaurant puts out a sign that says, ?We?re not going to accept gays and lesbians,? then they can do that.?

Gays may not be considered a protected class at the federal and state level, but cities and towns have been stepping in to pass their own discrimination laws protecting homosexuals.

In recent years, Fort Worth expanded its laws to not only forbid discrimination based on sexual orientation, but also the more loosely-defined terms of gender identity and gender expression.

The law applies to many groups of people and protects them from discrimination whether they are an employee or a customer.

Fort Worth only receives a handful of complaints a year, said Tracy Lasseter, with the city?s Human Relations Commission. Violators can face a $500 fine, but Lasseter says they've never issued one.

?The hammer is not very big,? she admits. ?We try to work out reconciliation with both parties.?

City workers try to reach an agreement between the company and the complainant ? either with an apology or the promise of extra sensitivity training.

Since state and federal laws trump local laws, Schulte says a judge would likely toss out the Fort Worth mandate if a fined company ever challenged the ordinance in court.

?It?s nice that it?s there. It?s nice that it?s on paper,? Schulte said, ?but at this point the statutes really don?t have any teeth to them.?

All Occasions sits just outside Fort Worth?s city limits, so the city?s discrimination laws do not apply.

Allen and Hudgins are now looking for other venues, while hoping that by going public their story will change minds.

?We?re just people,? Hudgins said. ?We?re not a gay couple... we?re a couple that loves each other.?

(AP) ? Sony is sharing the PlayStation 4 with the world.

The Japanese electronics giant unveiled the new gaming system Wednesday, hyping the machine as a "supercharged PC" with the ability to effortlessly share interactive experiences, by instantly broadcasting video of gaming action or virtually handing out health potions to friends online.

"Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation," said Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Sony said the system will feature an eight-core processor that can juggle more tasks than the PlayStation 3 and be part of a new digital ecosystem that's "the fastest, most powerful gaming network."

"Our long-term vision is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero," said Mark Cerny, Sony's lead system architect on the PS4.

The PS4 is Sony's first major game machine since the PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006. Wednesday's unveiling is Sony Corp.'s attempt to steal the spotlight from rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co., at least until Microsoft unveils its next Xbox in June, as expected, at the E3 video game expo in Los Angeles.

But one thing Sony neglected to do: show the actual device.

Instead, the two-hour event involved executives from Sony and its video game partners touting features and showing demonstration video on stage.

There was no word on price or availability, other than a flash on the screen saying "holiday 2013."

When the PlayStation 3 went on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 17, 2006, the 20 gigabyte model had a $500 price tag and the 60 GB version went for $600. They are now cheaper and come with more storage ? $270 for 250 GB and $300 for 500 GB. Comparable models of Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox 360 both start at $300.

Among the PS4's revisions is an updated controller that adds a touchpad and a "share" button. The controller also features a light bar, which means a new PlayStation camera can more easily track the device for motion control.

Many of the new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends can "look over your shoulder virtually," said David Perry, co-founder of the Sony-owned Internet game company Gaikai. With remote play, you can run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony's mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, which debuted last year.

Sony is building the new system on top of a traditional PC architecture, instead of a custom design, to make it easier for computer programmers to write games. Games designed for PS3 won't work, Sony said.

Among the games that were unveiled for the PS4 on Wednesday were the realistic racing simulator "Drive Club," super-powered action sequel "Infamous: Second Son," artsy puzzler "The Witness" and first-person shooter "Killzone: Shadow Fall."

Last fall, Nintendo launched the next generation of gaming consoles with the Wii U, which comes with a tablet-like controller called the GamePad. The controller allows two people playing the same game to have different experiences depending on whether they use the GamePad or a traditional Wii remote, which itself was revolutionary when it came out because of its motion-control features.

The original Wii has sold more units since its launch than both its rivals, but it has lost momentum in recent years as the novelty of its motion controller faded. Nintendo said it sold 3.1 million Wii Us by the end of 2012. It was a disappointing start for the first of a new generation of gaming systems.

In some ways, notably its ability to display high-definition games, the Wii U was just catching up to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, the preferred consoles to play popular games like "Call of Duty."

The PS4 is arriving amid declines in video game hardware, software and accessory sales. Research firm NPD Group said game sales fell 22 percent to $13.3 billion in 2012. With the launch of the PS4, Sony is looking to attract audiences who may have shifted their attention to games on Facebook, tablet computers and mobile phones.

All three console makers are trying to position their devices as entertainment hubs that can deliver movies, music and social networking as they try to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablets. The PlayStation online network will have access to Sony's video and music services, as well as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, with paid subscriptions to those services. People will also be able to access Facebook.

Beyond games, the PlayStation 4 will let people create animation in 3-D using a Move motion controller ? all in real time.

Discovery of smallest planet yet a 'milestone' in search for another Earth

The Kepler space telescope has found a planet smaller than Mercury orbiting a distant star. The discovery suggests Kepler has the precision to find a planet more like Earth.

For nearly 20 years, astronomers have filled the pantheon of planets beyond the solar system with objects ranging from behemoths several times Jupiter's mass to small orbs somewhat less hefty than Earth.

Now, a team reports finding the smallest planet yet ? a true pipsqueak orbiting a sun-like star some 215 light-years away near the constellation Cygnus. The planet has a mass at least 1 percent of Earth's mass, probably more. And it's about 30 percent Earth's size. This is slightly larger than the moon, which is 27 percent the size of Earth.

The planet, one of three in the system, orbits its host star once every 13.4 days.

Finding the smallest planet yet is more than an "isn't it cute" moment, suggests Thomas Barclay, an astronomer at NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif.

"This is a milestone" on the path to finding Earth-like planets, says Dr. Barclay, who is the lead author of a report of the find, which appears in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

The observations come courtesy of NASA's Kepler mission, a sensitive space telescope that observes more than 150,000 stars simultaneously in and near the head of Cygnus around the clock. Kepler's ultimate goal is to find Earth-like planets orbiting sun-like stars at Earth-like distances.

Kepler 37b, as the planet is known, is more like a mini-Mercury but on a much tighter orbit. But "the sort of precision we need from the instrument" to achieve the mission's goal "is demonstrated through this discovery."

In essence, the planet's very weak signature at some 9.3 million miles from its star is comparable to the signature researchers expect to see from an Earth-mass planet 93 million miles from its star, Earth's average distance from the sun. A planet betrays itself to Kepler by dimming its star's light repeatedly as it passes in front of it, a process astronomers call the transit method for detecting extrasolar planets.

The detection of Kepler 37b was extremely difficult, Barclay says. Many transits were needed to build up enough data to spot the dimming the planet imparts to the star. And Kepler's ability to take very precise measurements of the star's own light helped the team develop a highly accurate estimate of the star's size and mass.

Just as geophysicists can use earthquake vibrations traveling through the Earth to reconstruct the planet's interior, astrophysicists can use the same approach for determining the structure of distant stars. Kepler takes the measure of a star by recording rapid changes in its brightness from what in essence are sound waves moving through the hot gas.

In some cases, Kepler's insight into a star has forced team members to boost the size and mass estimates of its planets. These revisions mean planets that were initially thought to be comparable in size and mass to Earth, often turn out not to be rocky planets in all likelihood, Barclay explains.

So when Barclay took his data suggesting a tiny planet to the Kepler mission's resident astroseismologist, the colleague was not optimistic. "But then he came running down the corridor saying: 'I've detected something!' " Barclay recalls. Extremely precise measurements of the star Kepler 37 indicated that it indeed was relatively small star, hence the initial estimate of Kepler 37b as a munchkin held up.

Unfortunately, independent efforts to confirm the planet's presence with Earth-based telescopes using a different detection approach ? which spots the wobble a star's spectrum displays from the gravitational tug of an orbiting planet ? came up empty.

Still, the Kepler team was able to rule out other possible explanations for Kepler 37's dimming to a high degree of confidence using statistical tools and the long observations of the star and its cosmic neighborhood.

Computer simulations suggest that the planet and its two siblings are in a stable configuration around the star, and that the planet likely is rocky and devoid of an atmosphere. The simulations also indicated that Kepler 37b would have swept its orbital zone clear of any debris left over from the system's formation some 6 billion years ago. This puts it squarely in the "planet" camp, despite its diminutive size, versus "dwarf planet," the category to which Pluto has been exiled.

"This is a hot planet on a short orbit," Barclay says. "The next step is to look for planets on longer orbital periods. It's just a matter of time. The longer you look, the further out in orbital period you can probe."

But he's not undervaluing this discovery.

"The fact that we are finding things smaller than we know of in our own solar system I think is really exciting," he says. "We're probing the architectures of other star systems."

Shin Megami Tensei 4 gets May 23 release date, limited edition 3DS XL in Japan

Shin Megami Tensei 4 will be released May 23, 2013 in Japan and will also receive a limited edition Nintendo 3DS XL bundle for the game, Famitsu reports.

The limited edition 3DS XL will include Shin Megami Tensei 4 pre-installed, like North American holiday bundles did with Super Mario 3D Land last year. Neither the price or the release date of the limited edition bundle were disclosed.

Atlus confirmed that the game was coming to 3DS last May. A profile from last September revealed that Shin Megami Tensei 4 would begin in a medieval-inspired setting but would eventually transport ancient samurais to a fantasy version of modern Tokyo filled with demons. To see how that translates to gameplay, you can check out a trailer from last year.

We've reached out to Atlus for information on whether the game or the limited edition 3DS are headed to other regions and will update this article as we receive more information.

(AP) ? Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers turned their attention Monday from bad basketball and trade talk to more somber matters.

The death of Jerry Buss, their longtime owner, was a blow for a franchise that was so often in championship chase under his leadership. With Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, and finally Bryant and Pau Gasol, the Lakers won 10 titles under since Buss became owner in 1979.

The Bryant-Gasol-Dwight Howard-Steve Nash combination wasn't working nearly as well.

The Lakers are 25-29, currently in 10th place in the Western Conference, miles behind the Clippers in their division and their own building, and out of the playoff race. Gasol is hurt and Howard has been unhappy, leading to speculation he could be dealt before Thursday's trade deadline even though the Lakers have said otherwise.

Yet Bryant spoke confidently of a turnaround Sunday after the All-Star game, just hours before Buss' death at 80.

"I think we've been playing pretty well coming into the break," Bryant said. "We laid a couple of eggs there against the Celtics and the Clippers, but all in all we've been playing pretty well, much better than we have been. We just have to continue to improve and we'll do much better in the second half."

It starts Tuesday, with the Lakers looking to get back on track, the Miami Heat in command in the East and LeBron James in command of everyone.

Bryant blocked James' shots twice in the final minutes of the West's 143-138 victory over the East on Sunday in the All-Star game. It was a rare failure for James, who has been sensational all season and whose Heat have hit their stride. Miami ran off seven straight victories going into the break and starting to build a comfortable lead in the conference.

"We just want to play our game," he said. "We want to continue to get better each and every game. Not waste an opportunity when we get on the floor. Play as a team and if we do that, we'll be fine.

The Heat overwhelmed the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Thursday in an NBA Finals rematch, improving to just 13-11 on the road. All-Star forward Chris Bosh said Miami is only a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10, believing the Heat still have to put together a string of road victories to prove they are really in championship form.

"Just the fact that we had room to improve, we can play better on the road and we're still first in the East, that means a lot to us and that means we can get a lot better," Bosh said.

New York is the closest challenger in the standings, while Indiana and Chicago have already beaten Miami this season and could become stronger with Danny Granger soon returning to the Pacers and perhaps Derrick Rose coming back to the Bulls at some point.

San Antonio, with the league's best record, Oklahoma City and the Clippers are the teams in best position to face the Heat if they reach their third straight finals.

The Lakers were considered a candidate, but that was long ago.

The summer acquisitions of Howard and Nash were supposed to get the Lakers right back to the top. But Nash was hurt early and Howard has never fully recovered from back surgery, adding a torn labrum in his right shoulder to his problems.

He has not fit well in Mike D'Antoni's offense and has acknowledged not always having fun this season. What's more, he has given the Lakers no guarantee he will return when he becomes a free agent in July. But would they really deal a player who was the NBA's dominant big man before his injuries?

"I don't know what they are going to do. But at this point, it doesn't matter," Bryant said. "What matters to us is what we do on Wednesday and go from there. That's the most important thing. That's my message to the team, is that you can't worry about the future, you can't worry about the past. You just have to focus on the present."

Paul will also be a free agent in July, yet the Clippers have far less reason to think he would bolt. They have built a team that's been as good as any when healthy, a deep group led by Paul, the MVP of the All-Star game after finishing with 20 points and 15 assists.

Four games behind the Spurs, the Clippers will have plenty of eyes on them heading in Thursday's 3 p.m. EST deadline to see if they think there's a move out there that would solidify them as a championship contender. Paul believes they already are.

"Whatever we have out there, we're going to fight with. I don't care what it is, either. We're like brothers," Paul said. "I love our team and what we're doing and we're going to keep moving forward."

So, says Bryant, will the Lakers. An NBA Finals duel like the one he had with James down the stretch of the All-Star game seems out of reach this season. Yet the way Bryant defended shows he's ready for the challenge.

"My switch never went off. It was on all weekend," he said. "It was good to see the guys but at the same time there was an undercurrent that went on during the first half of the season that I won't let go. Come Wednesday, we have to be ready to go."
