HC price request to Coal India

Calcutta, Jan. 6: Calcutta High Court today ?requested? Coal India Ltd (CIL) to put on hold till January 15 its move to increase prices.

?Mind you, this is not an order. We are requesting CIL that if possible, they should not give effect to its December 30 notification in which the company increased coal prices, till January 15,? Justice Pinaki Ghosh said.

Moloy Bose, the lawyer appearing for Coal India, told the court that he would have to speak to CIL authorities and prayed for time to file an affidavit stating the company?s pricing policy.

The division bench accepted the plea and fixed January 15 as the next hearing date.

The high court is hearing a PIL filed by green activist Subhash Dutta alleging that CIL was hiking prices ?whimsically?.

Senior Coal India officials could not be contacted this evening. Text messages to the cellphones of company chairman N.C. Jha, director (finance) A.K. Sinha and general manager (legal) S. Majumdar went unanswered.

A Coal India official said: ?A decision on the high court?s request will be taken after our chairman comes back (from Delhi) tomorrow.?
