March 22, 2012 Researchers from SRI International and the University of Michigan have taken the first-ever measurement of naturally occurring auroral turbulence recorded using a nanosatellite radar receiver. The research was done with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA's Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa) Initiative.

The distinctive radar echoes recorded on March 8 were taken with the Radio Aurora Explorer (RAX) CubeSat. The RAX nanonsatellite measured turbulence over Fairbanks, Alaska that was a direct result of a geomagnetic storm triggered by the largest solar flare in the past five years. The Earth's high latitude ionosphere, a region of the upper atmosphere associated with solar-driven aurora or "northern lights," becomes highly unstable when large currents flow during geomagnetic storms. RAX was specifically designed by SRI and the University of Michigan to measure this auroral turbulence from an orbital vantage point inaccessible to traditional ground-based radars.

"The RAX radar echo discovery has convincingly proved that miniature satellites, beyond their role as teaching tools, can provide high caliber measurements for fundamental space weather research," said Therese Moretto Jorgensen, Ph.D., Geospace program director in the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences at the National Science Foundation.

The project's mission was to use small satellites called CubeSats to remotely explore formation of charged particle filaments created in response to intense electrical currents in space. These plasma structures, a form of turbulence called field-aligned irregularities (FAIs), can distort communication and navigation signals such as global positioning systems (GPS). During the recent solar flare, RAX measured FAI echoes using the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR), an NSF research radar operated by SRI.

"The recently collected radar echoes allow us to determine the root cause and to possibly predict future disturbances in the auroral ionosphere disturbances that can severely compromise communication and GPS satellites," said Hasan Bahcivan, Ph.D., a research physicist in SRI's Center for Geospace Studies, and principal investigator of the RAX mission.

A team of University of Michigan students under the direction of James Cutler, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department, designed, built, and operated the satellite and gathered the radar echo data.

RAX was the first CubeSat to be selected as part of an NSF program to use small satellites for space weather and atmospheric research. The RAX CubeSat is a three liter satellite weighing three kilograms. It was launched by NASA on October 28, 2011, and has since completed 18 experiments.

Monarch butterflies down again this year as decline continues

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Unlike their colorful wings, the future of Monarch butterflies may not be too bright and their numbers are expected to be alarmingly down again this year, says a Texas A&M University researcher.

Craig Wilson, a senior research associate in the Center for Mathematics and Science Education and a long-time butterfly enthusiast, says reports by the World Wildlife Fund, private donors and Mexico's Michoacan state show that Monarch numbers will be down almost 30 percent in 2012 as they make their annual trek from their breeding grounds in Mexico and move across Texas.

The figures show an alarming decades-long decline in their numbers, Wilson says, adding that it is best "that we take the long view rather than yearly cycles.

"The latest information shows that Monarchs will be down from 25 to 30 percent this year, and that has been part of a disturbing trend the last few years," Wilson notes.

"Last year's severe drought and fires in the region no doubt played a part, resulting in less nectar for the Monarchs as they migrated south. But estimates show that each year, millions of acres of land are being lost that would support Monarchs, either by farmers converting dormant land for crop use -- mainly to herbicide tolerant corn and soybeans -- or the overuse of herbicides and mowing. Milkweed is the key plant because it's the only plant where the female will lay her eggs."

The loss of such lands is a critical factor in the Monarchs' survival, Wilson explains.

"Chip Taylor, who is the director of Monarch Watch at the University of Kansas, estimates that 100 million acres of land have already been lost that previously supported Monarchs," Wilson notes.

Most of the Monarch reserves are in the Mexican state of Michoacan. It's an area where Monarchs spend the winter and mate before heading north, Wilson points out.

In the spring, the butterflies leave Mexico and across Texas, and Wilson has noticed both eggs and young Monarch caterpillars feeding on milkweed in the Monarch Waystation, a butterfly garden outside his office. The adults will fly various routes through Texas, with the fourth generation eventually arriving in Canada.

This year, according to the Texas Monarch Watch, Monarchs covered about 7.14 acres of forest in their Mexican breeding grounds compared to 9.9 acres last year, and it shows a continued long-term downward trend in Monarch population since official surveys began in 1994.

Wilson says there has to be a national effort to save Monarchs or their declining numbers will reach the critical stage.

"We need a national priority of planting milkweed to assure there will be Monarchs in the future," he says. "If we could get several states to collaborate, we might be able to promote a program where the north-south interstates were planted with milkweed, such as Lady Bird Johnson's program to plant native seeds along Texas highways 35-40 years ago. This would provide a 'feeding' corridor right up to Canada for the Monarchs."

CrossFit Games, Making Fitness Fun . . . Not Really ? Health and ...

When you?re gasping for breath midway through a CrossFit Games WOD (Work Out of the Day), you can?t help but say: ?I?d rather be ?. . . (here?s where you insert the word that best describes what you?d really rather be doing). But you gotta hand it to the minds behind CrossFit who got creative and birthed the CrossFit Games. Perhaps by using the word ?game? people would think fitness at this level might somehow be fun. Perhaps it is, in an odd sort of way.

They must have done something right, seeing that the number of registrants around the world doubled this year to over 55,000 participants!

So far, in the Master?s Men (visualize old codgers from 50 to 55 years old), I?ve completed 4 of 6 weekly workouts. That is to say, I?ve survived 4 of 6 weekly workouts. I?ve been having so much ?fun? I nearly didn?t realize that I?m in 102nd place in this age group. Last I looked there are over 600 other older gentlemen in this age category who are squeezing out their last few drops of Testosterone.

Despite the challenges posed in the WODs, CrossFit does what it?s motto suggests in that it is truly: Forging Elite Fitness. That translates into tremendous personal gains in performance: whether sport, hobby, or in my case, repeatedly launching and catching my active 3-year-old daughter. The payoff is most certainly worth it.

Lawyers for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, suspected of killing 16 Afghan civilians, will likely mount a two-pronged defense, military law experts say, attacking the evidence against him while also arguing that his reported combat injuries and mental trauma created diminished mental capacity.

Bales? civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, has suggested such an approach in his public comments on the case, in which the Army has identified the soldier as the lone suspect in the March 11 attack but not yet charged him.

?There?s no forensic evidence, there?s no medical examiner?s evidence, there?s no evidence about how many alleged victims or where those remains are,? he told NBC Nightly News on Tuesday, adding that he intends to travel to Afghanistan to oversee his own investigation.

But he also stated that his client had ?no memory? of the attack and suggested that could be from a concussive head injury. In comments to CBS News on Monday, he indicated he would make a "diminished capacity" argument rather than pursue an insanity defense.

Army Sgt. Robert Bales' lawyer questions evidence in Afghanistan killings

Some military law experts interviewed by msnbc.com said they expect?a legal pincer attack, in which the defense may try to win acquittal by attacking the evidence but have a fallback position aimed at winning a lesser sentence than the death penalty -- which Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said could be sought in this case.

Military officials have said that after drinking at an Army outpost in southern Afghanistan on March 11, Bales, 38, crept away in the night to two nearby villages, where he shot his victims and set many of them on fire. Nine of the 16 victims were children, they said.

Gary Solis, former head of the Marine Corps? Military Law Branch and current adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law School, said the fact that the crime occurred in a combat zone in a distant country complicates the task for prosecutors, who are expected to charge Bales with premeditated murder and other crimes.

To convict Bales of that charge, prosecutors would have to prove that people died, the means by which they died, that the accused is the person who used those means and had premeditated the offense, Solis said.

That would be no easy feat, given the possibility of numerous crime scene complications, he said.

?The prosecution is under additional burden in that they?re trying a crime that happened ? 9,000 miles away,? he said. ?They have no bodies, they have no autopsies, they have no forensics, they have no photographs, they have no witnesses. There is no Afghan who is going to come here to testify against this guy, so how do they prove premeditation? It?s going to be a problem for them.?

Daniel Conway, a lawyer and former Marine staff sergeant who has been involved in battlefield investigations in Iraq and Afghanistan of alleged crimes by U.S. soldiers, said prosecuting Bales will be ?exceptionally difficult.? Even establishing him as the gunman could be problematic, he said.

?It still remains to be seen whether any of these Afghan local nationals can actually identify Bales as the shooter,? he said. ?Now there?s going to be some real linguistic divides here in terms of people?s ? ability to communicate what they saw but you may very well have the potential down the road for a defense that he didn?t do it.?

The physical evidence from combat zone crimes is similarly suspect, Conway said.

?In these combat zone cases, you have crime scenes that are contaminated almost instantly ? bodies are moved, forensic evidence is either contaminated or cleaned, there (are) typically no photographs that are taken of forensic value so you can?t necessarily go back and do a very thorough wound analysis,? he said, noting that it would be difficult to exhume the bodies if they have already been buried due to Islamic tradition.

?It?s not easy to separate the fact from the fiction in this kind of case,? he added.

If Bales? case goes to trial, the defense will have an opportunity to react to the government?s case, because?the Army presents first. That will enable his lawyers to decide whether to focus on attacking the evidence or arguing that Bales? reported combat injuries and mental trauma from the battlefield created diminished mental capacity. Or, they may do both, Solis said.

?The government has to go first and it has to prove its case,? he said. ?He?s going to be ready to take advantage of any chink in the government?s arguments that he perceives in addition to whatever argument he may have.?

Bales was on his fourth tour in a war zone since signing up for the Army after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. He had spent three years in Iraq on his previous tours, during which time he lost part of a foot and suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to a vehicle rollover, media reports say. Two days before he allegedly attacked the Afghan villagers, he saw the aftermath of a bombing in which a fellow soldier had his leg blown off, The Associated Press reported.

While an insanity defense remains possible, experts who spoke to msnbc.com note that winning such a case is extremely difficult in a military trial.

Unlike an ?insanity defense,? where Bales would have to be shown not to have known right from wrong to be acquitted, "diminished capacity" is simply an argument that the crime was not premeditated and that mitigating factors should lessen his punishment.

?That?s very hard, so ? he might have to go with this diminished capacity,? Greg Rinckey, a former attorney with the U.S. Army?s Judge Advocate General Corps who is now managing partner of military law firm Tully Rinckey PLLC, said of an insanity defense. ?Most of the cases that I?ve tried, that?s what we?ve went with is because we couldn?t get to ? the complete no mental responsibility or the capability to stand trial.?

Eugene R. Fidell, who teaches military justice at Yale Law School, said testimony indicating that Bales? was afflicted by post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, could be introduced at this juncture, but would be unlikely to result in acquittal.

?Maybe some psychiatrist will say he suffers from PTSD,? he said. ?That?s not a defense ? probably. There?s no case in which PTSD has given rise to a successful insanity defense in the military.?

Solis said Bales? lawyers would likely put the brain injury, the wounding of his comrade, the multiple deployments and his foot injury into the ?diminished capacity argument box,? with the traumatic brain injury (TBI) possibly being a strong element in support of that? claim.

?You can get a doctor who will come in there with a chart and ? show here?s a normal brain and here?s his brain getting TBI,? he said. ?So the jury?s got something concrete ? that they can wrap their not guilty finding around,? if that?s how they?re leaning.

Conway said doctors compare traumatic brain injury to a ?hardware? problem, whereas PTSD is more like a ?software? issue.

Solis, the former head of the Marines law branch, said the horrific nature of the crime could ironically benefit Bales? defense.

?They?re going to say, ?Would somebody in control of their facilities, somebody who didn?t have diminished capacity have done something this wacky??? he said. ?The act itself is inherently supportive of a diminished capacity? argument.

As a result, he said, Bales? case might not even make it to a military courtroom. Perhaps a deal will be struck, or maybe mental health exams -? which could takes months -- will show that Bales is not competent to stand trial.

But Conway, the former Marine who has been involved in high-profile military crime cases, including the 2005 killing by U.S. Marines of 24 unarmed Iraqi men, women and children in Haditha, Iraq, said the defense also runs a risk by telegraphing that it intends to argue diminished capacity.

?It?s a two-edged sword. On the one hand, if they can prevent this from turning into a capital (death penalty) case, that?s a huge victory,? he said. ?On the other hand, they?re giving away the playbook and they don?t have any access to the witnesses. So the government is going to be out talking to everybody trying to rebut the diminished capacity defense.?

At the same time, a defense built on PTSD and brain injury is generally a tough sell in a military courtroom, Conway said.

?We have used it many times? to get charges reduced, he said. ?I can tell you that it?s hard to get a military jury to be sympathetic to these kinds of defenses because the way they look at it is, ?I?ve had multiple deployments, I?ve had multiple concussive events ? I?ve got family problems, and I didn?t go out and do this.??

?So you?re going to have to be able to explain to the jury why this case is different from their own experiences in combat and that?s going to be tough to do.? ?

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles already hit the big screen in 1990, but they're returning in a new movie.

Perhaps seizing on the notion that moviegoers are willing to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to see Michael Bay's films, while maintaining a deep contempt for his storytelling process and heavy use of exploding computer graphics, the internet was set ablaze Monday, with blogs and major media outlets slamming the filmmaker's announcement concerning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and telling tales of fan outrage.

?Transformers? Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura promises Michael Bay-directed reboot in 2014

?When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when [we] are done with this movie," Bay said about his upcoming series reboot during a presentation at the Nickelodon upfronts. "These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

Outrage boiled over, leading Bay to issue a terse response on a website he often uses to make announcements.

"Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script," he wrote. "Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."

It's going to take some heavy convincing, though, because outlets and select social media-using turtle diehards whipped up a severe indignancy at the mere thought of altering the origin story of the pizza-loving, crime fighting mutant?turtles that were such a cultural phenomenon in the 1980s and early 90s. Various outlets reported that, based on some tweets and Reddit threads, fans were in up in arms, including Entertainment Weekly, Washington Post and the AV Club.

The Guardian went straight for the jugular, contrasting the implausibility of an alien origin with the well-accepted ooze-induced transformation.

"Making the turtles aliens would ruin everything ? their desire to be accepted, their bizarre late-1980s street lingo, their fondness for pizza. Everything," the paper argued. "Are we really meant to believe that there's an alien race of giant turtles who just happen to all be named after renowned Renaissance artists from this planet, and speak English, and who came to Earth with a giant elderly rat who's presumably from the same race, just to live in sewers and loudly eschew anchovies at every opportunity? Hardly, Michael Bay. Hardly."

It's a national scandal, and Turtlegate got more ammunition when the man who voiced the orange masked, pizza-loving Michelangelo got invovled.

"You probably don?t know me but I did some voice work on the first set of movies that you are starting to talk about sodomizing," Robbie Riss wrote in a letter to Bay that he posted online (via TMZ). "I know believing in mutated talking turtles is kinda silly to begin with but am I supposed to be led to believe there are ninjas from another planet? The rape of our childhood memories continues."

Volvo signs NBA sensation Lin to promote cars

BEIJING (AP) ? Emerging NBA star Jeremy Lin has signed a two-year contract with automaker Volvo to promote the company's cars around the world but especially in Asia.

The Chinese-owned company said in statement Tuesday that Lin will participate in Volvo's worldwide corporate and marketing activities as a brand ambassador. The contract will focus on China, the United States and other Chinese-language markets in Asia.

Lin was undrafted and cut by two NBA teams before he shot to stardom with the New York Knicks this season. He's the NBA's first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent.

China is a major market for the NBA. Earlier this month, NBA superstar LeBron James agreed to promote Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins ice cream in Asia.

The popularity of basketball in Asia has grown during the last decade, in part because of former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming of China, who retired last year.

Volvo made the announcement in New York. It says the first commercials with Lin may appear as early as June.

Perfect Roast Chicken | Weelicious ? - Fast, Easy & Fresh ...

I?ve cooked and eaten a good amount of roast chicken in my day. I like to think I?ve seen it all ? from birds so bland and boring they weren?t worth eating to cluckers so juicy and succulent I devoured every last bite.

I?ve discovered two things that are key to making an amazing roast chicken: 1) cooking at a very high temperature so that the skin becomes crispy and golden and seals the meat inside so it remains moist and 2) buying the best quality chicken possible.

To perfect this recipe I experimented for an entire week, flipping, seasoning, and cooking at different times and temperatures. I roasted the chickens of several different store brands as well as a few from my favorite farmer?s market vendors. When it came time to taste test, I found that the quality of the bird had everything to do with the amount of ooh?s and ahh?s it received.

As you can probably imagine, I wound up serving my family chicken every night that week, but the recipe turned out so well, everyone was as enthusiastic with dinner on day 4 as they were on day 1 ? and my husband insists that this is the best chicken he?s ever tasted.

So kick your oven temperature way up, buy the best quality bird you can get your hands on and watch your family devour this chicken. Just make sure to set aside 1/2 cup or so to make Chicken Bean and Cheese Quesadillas for school lunch the next day!

Roast Chicken (Serves 4)

1 4-Pound Chicken
2 Tsp Salt
3-4 Sprigs Thyme
1 Small Lemon, cut in half

1. Wash the chicken and pat dry, removing as much excess liquid as possible.
2. Rub the salt all over the chicken ? inside and out.
3. Place chicken in a 9-inch skillet with an oven-proof handle. Refrigerate, uncovered, for 3-24 hours.*
5. Heat oven to 475?F. **
6. Place the skillet, without the chicken, in the oven for 15 minutes or on a stovetop burner for 1 minute to heat.
7. Stuff chicken with thyme and lemon and tie legs together.
8. Place chicken breast-side up in the pan and bake uncovered, for 30 minutes.
9. Flip chicken over and place back in the oven for 20 minutes.
10. Turn the chicken breast-side up again for an additional 10 minutes.
11. Remove from oven and allow chicken to cool for 10 minutes and serve.

* If you don?t have a skillet with an oven-proof handle, use a baking dish just larger than your chicken. Though in step 6, do not heat dish on the stovetop ? only in the oven.

** Use the convection setting on your oven if you have one, reducing the cooking time in step 8 to 25 minutes.
